Charlie has been an employee with the David D. Hunting Y since it opened in 2005 and now leads the personal training team. He is a graduate of Grand Valley State University where he got his Bachelor of Science degree in Corporate Fitness and Wellness through the American College of Sports Medicine, Charlie is a certified Health and Fitness Specialist.

Nick Ballard
Personal Trainer
Nick graduated from GVSU with a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with a Health and Fitness Emphasis. He is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. To train Nick uses Olympic-lifting techniques, interval training, and body weight exercises.

Brian Gerardi
Personal Trainer
Brian has is a B.A. in English and B.S. in Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy from Grand Valley State University. He is an ACSM certified personal trainer and his favorite workouts are strength training and doing a cardio circuit “blitz.”

Andi is a certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. She is a Certified Spin and TRX instructor and her fitness roots started with group instruction. Andi always enjoys a challenge and loves challenging others and has a deep responsibility for her clients to achieve their goals in and out of the Y.

Matt Henderson
Personal Trainer
Matt attended the Personal Training program at Blue Heron Academy where he gained ACE certification and is also certified as a personal trainer through the National Strength Conditioning Association. Matt loves the principles of Crossfit and the style of training this program encompasses. The emphasis of gymnastic movements in training is another style of training Matt enjoys.

Jennifer Hokenson
Personal Trainer/Lead Wellness Specialist
Jennifer graduated from Western Michigan University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science. She will be attending graduate school there in the fall for Exercise Physiology. Here at the DDH Y she is a Personal Trainer, Xfit Instructor and Senior Fitness group instructor. Some of her favorite workouts are “Fight Gone Bad” (from Crossfit), various types of lunges, any form of dance, gymnastics and yoga.

Chad Hughes
Personal Trainer
Chad has his personal training certification through the American Council on Exercise and also his primary group exercise instruction certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. He is attending Grand Valley State University finishing his degree in Exercise Science: Clinical Exercise Science. Chad uses a variety of training methods from high intensity cross fit training to simple orthodox strength training.

Jim Patch
Running Coach
Jim is a certified personal trainer through the Blue Heron Academy and the American Council on Exercise. Jim as a passion for running and has competed in it most of his life. He teaches the Running Club (advanced runners), Five K Continuum (intermediate), and the Couch to 5K running programs. His favorite workout is called a “three, two, one pick up running drill.”

Kylie VandenBrand
Personal Trainer
Kylie has a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Fitness and Health from Grand Valley State University and is an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Personal Trainer. Her favorite areas of fitness are strength training, German body comp, strongman training, interval training, and kettlebells.

Personal Trainer
James has a bachelor’s in Movement Science from Grand Valley State University and a master’s in Human Movement from A.T. Still University. He has fitness certifications from the NSCA as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Performance Enhancement Specialist through NASM, and is a Corrective Exercise Specialist through NASM. His favorite type of workout is always the “right one for the job”.

Julie is a Certified Personal Trainer through the accredited National Academy of Sports Medicine and her specialty certifications include: AFAA as a Group Exercise Instructor, Water Art as an Aquatics Group Exercise Instructor, Zumba, Kickboxing, Bosu Trainer, Gliding, Water Safety Instructor and life guard. Julie focuses on building functional strength, fat loss and improving overall health and well-being and is committed to helping clients stay motivated, set realistic goals, and improve their overall fitness.
