By Dave Leggett, Senior Program Development Director, Southeast YMCA

The YMCA has a rich history of commitment to develop innovative programs that help families lead healthy lives, improve personal and family relationships, become better leaders, strengthen positive values, and develop specific skills, while at the same time building a sense of community; all things that the sport of basketball has encompassed since its’ beginning. It has been more than one-hundred and twenty years since basketball was first invented at the Y, and the fascination still continues... Read More

November is more than a month to give thanks and celebrate family at the Y. It is a month to recognize, honor, and give thanks to our courageous men and women who serve our country, as well as their families. Each year the President signs a proclamation declaring November Military Family Month, something at the Y we take to heart.

In honor of the month, here is our thanks to our... Read More

For the first time ever in history, forecasts from the ““2012 F as in Fat(F as in Fat Report)”:http://www.healthyamericans.org/report/100/” report, are predicting that adult obesity rates could rise above 60 percent in 13 states, with Michigan growing to 59.4%. If we continue on our current path the number of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension and arthritis could increase 10 times between 2010 and 2020 – and double again by 2030.

So the question stands, is there any... Read More

This is my first season managing the YMCA Farmers Market, and it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s been exciting to watch the season evolve, from spring’s first bunch of beets to summer’s abundance of heirloom tomatoes, to the promise of this fall’s butternut squash.

I recently graduated from the University of Michigan, where I studied farming and food systems. This background, in addition to a... Read More

By Justin Lyons, Senior Health & Wellness Director, Spartan Stores YMCA Did you know that in recent years, 29 high school football players have died from heat-related causes? Countless others have come dangerously close. What really scares me is when athletes feel symptoms of heat exhaustion, they do not recognize the risks. Because they don’t want to “wimp out,” they often opt to “play through” the headache, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, chills, nausea and muscle cramps that signal heat exhaustion.

Football players are more prone to dehydration... Read More

The race for Olympic gold is the focus of athletes, judges, and audiences both at the events and in homes around the world. I was thinking that of the 36 different competitive categories that athletes can participate in during the Games, a member or program member at the Y can learn 29 of them in one way or another at the Y.

Many sports are new from when I remember watching Olympic Games as a... Read More
