Corporate America now gets it; they understand that reducing employee’s waistlines and providing wellness programs equates to a better bottom-line at the end of the fiscal year.

By Kelly Knecht, Corporate Relations Membership Director, YMCA Greater Grand Rapids

The Y is dedicated to supporting a vibrant, thriving community and workforce through our Corporate Membership Program. Now, over two hundred west Michigan companies have joined this program and have crunched the bottom-line numbers and like what they are seeing.

After spending seven years in the healthcare industry, I observed a wide disconnect between wellness plans administered by the employer, insurance company, and the third party vendors which is still ongoing today. The gap was easy to spot. Everyone has a plan, but no one offered the needed tactical day-to-day elements to reduce the workforce waistline. This is where the Y comes in!

We’ve revamped this program for 2012 to be more of a partnership between the employer, employee, and the Y. These three elements together ensures the companies that join will receive a greater return on their healthcare investment while at the same time earn a healthy, more productive, and competitive workforce. Also, through this program, the Y assists employees and their families in managing their overall health and well-being through physical activity, quarterly educational seminars, and more – all while utilizing the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids’ six family-friendly facilities. (All locations offer onsite child care!)

The fact is that companies have no other option. Healthcare costs are only going up. And each time they go up, a company’s profit margins are going to go down. Local companies have taken action to, at minimum, stop the bottom-line losses and better compete by enrolling their workers in a down-to-earth, no-nonsense, and easy to participate wellness and fitness program at the Y.

Make the call for a better bottom-line and healthier workforce and see what options your company has and the real cost saving benefits there are to a healthier employee.
