Accessibility Statement

General Information

In keeping with the goals of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, this website has been developed to provide a significant number of accessibility features. These features complement the use of assistive technologies and help make the site usable to the broadest possible audience, from those who use assistive technologies (i.e. screenreaders) to different web browsers (i.e. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome) to different operating systems (i.e. Window, Mac) to those using a computer or handheld devices.

Visual Design

This website uses Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control all visual presentation. Turning off the style sheet will affect the visual presentation of the website, but all content will still be readable.

Changing Text Size

This website’s CSS makes use of relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified ‘text-size’ option in visual web browsers.

Links

Links are written to be distinct and make sense out of context, especially for those who may navigate by links, use a screenreader, and/or a text-only web browser. Many links use the title attribute to describe the link in greater detail; this information is displayed in most visual web browsers when the pointing device is placed over the link and is also available to those who use a screenreader.

Images

All content images include descriptive alternative text (alt-text) through the alt attribute. For purely decorative and artistic graphics, the alt attribute is set to be empty or null (alt=””) to enable those who use a screenreader or text-only web browser to bypass them. Some linked images use the title attribute to describe the link for the image in greater detail; this information is displayed in most visual web browsers when the pointing device is placed over a linked image and is also available to those who use a screenreader.

Standards Compliance

This website validates in HTML 5.0 (Hypertext Markup Language), as well as CSS 2.0 and CSS 3.0 (Cascading Style Sheet). Compliance with WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and Section 508 has also been checked and the website found to pass both.
