Nutrition in Action uses a whole-school approach to promote culturally appropriate hands-on nutrition education and physical activity for students, parents, and educators.

Classroom Nutrition Education Series

Nutrition in Action educators are for improving healthy behaviors in the school environment by presenting simple, engaging, and interactive nutrition and physical activity instruction. Lessons are taught by a Y nutrition educator, are geared for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and are aligned with Michigan Common Core State Standards.

Schools are encouraged to make simple changes to their environment that reinforce healthy choices and support healthy lifestyles. While improving student and staff knowledge is important, the ultimate goal is to change behavior and to help families understand the benefits associated with eating better and moving more.

Research shows that students who eat healthy foods and get regular exercise are healthier, show improved academic achievement, are more focused, and miss fewer days at school. Evaluation results show positive change in behaviors which include: eating more fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products; drinking less soda; being more physically active; and choosing healthier snacks.

Nutrition in Action is funded by the USDA/Michigan Nutrition Network, and has served more than 30,000 vulnerable children and families in the community this year.
