Adaptive Sports

UNIVERSAL BY DESIGN

Intentional considerations to form and function will allow this campus and its programs the highest degree of accessibility possible. The Mary Free Bed YMCA is a one-of-a-kind facility in the country uniting able-bodied individuals and persons with disabilities under the pursuit of fully accessible sports, fitness, and general well-being.

The Mary Free Bed YMCA uniquely features:

  • The first universally designed campus – engineered to eliminate steps, curbs, and other obstacles in order to fully encourage ease of movement and support physical activity.
  • Designated parking beside all major outdoor sports fields, dramatically reducing the distance between parking and playing.
  • High-contrast lighting, color schemes, and larger font sizes to meet the needs of individuals with visual impairments.
  • Specially designed locker rooms with fully accessible changing tables for individuals and family members with limited mobility.
  • Hearing aid loops throughout the building for individuals with hearing impairments.
  • LEED certified design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Wheelchair softball field and preferred gymnasium programming for wheelchair sports.
  • Accessible greenhouse, teaching kitchen, and outdoor garden to promote nutrition education for all.
  • Fully accessible playground for kids and families to enjoy.
