GRAND RAPIDS TO HOST FIRST EVER DOWNTOWN DISC GOLF EVENT

Grand Rapids, MI (August 21, 2017) – Brick fairways and rooftop tee boxes are taking over downtown as locals and businesses alike participate in the first-of-its-kind urban disc golf experience in downtown Grand Rapids on Saturday, September 9. The tournament, coined Urban Disco, is the brainchild of Lambert, Edwards & Associates (LE&A), Michigan’s largest public relations firm and headquartered in the center of the course.

“West Michigan continues to pioneer unique opportunities to draw people to the city, creating innovative and artistic environments for an ultimate downtown Grand Rapids experience,” said Jeff Lambert, CEO of LE&A. “We are a community that is passionate and committed to supporting our city, and we wanted to create an event in our backyard that will nurture neighborhood growth and continue our ‘cool city’ reputation.”

The course runs throughout Grand Rapids’ Heartside and Arena neighborhoods and will feature 18 holes, each with varying levels of difficulty. Shotgun start times are at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and groups of five can register online for $250 per team. Individuals can register for $50. All proceeds will go to the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids to support its youth sports programs, and the event will include a youth clinic hosted by PDGA professionals.

“Many youth lack access to certain sports because of the costs often associated with them,” said Scott Lewis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. “Money raised from this event will allow kids access to more opportunities and also to learn about a new sport that they can play in their neighborhood and nearby park.”

Lewis added that the unique city-street course also makes Urban Disco accessible to all individuals – able bodied or disabled – following the lead of the new Mary Free Bed YMCA’s commitment to Universal Design, making it barrier free for all.

The event will be open to the general public as long as main event participants are 18 years of age or older. Urban Disco will feature family-friendly portions as well, including the coaching clinic for kids and a putting green for those who wish to participate. Players will be restricted to the use of official Urban Disco rubber discs, ensuring the utmost safety for business storefronts and residential units along the course.

“As the first female mayor of Grand Rapids, I understand the power of firsts,” said Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. “There are many firsts generated in West Michigan: Art Prize, LaughFest – all of which have evolved into innovative and engaging experiences that allow our community to connect and support great causes. We hope for similar great things for Urban Disco and believe our city will be better for it.”

In addition to title sponsor Lambert, Edwards & Associates, key underwriters include Meijer, Spectrum Industries, Founder Beer Company and Mercantile Bank.
