The Y is Helping Kids Charge into Summer with Healthy Habits
Grand Rapids, MI (April 27, 2016) – On Saturday, April 29, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids will be holding free community events to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active all summer long. Healthy Kids Day®, the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, features games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, open swim, gym activities and more to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home. Guests don’t need to be YMCA members to attend these Healthy Kids Day® events.
YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day®, celebrated at nearly 1,600 Y’s across the country, aims to get more kids moving and learning, so they can keep up the habit all summer long – a critical out-of-school time for kids’ health. Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year.
“When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles – or gaps – that prevent them from reaching their full potential, related to hunger, water safety, learning, safe spaces to play, and health. Each year the Y helps thousands of youth achieve more, providing a safe place to learn, stay healthy and build friendships,” said Nicole Pratt, Association Child Care Director. “As part of the Y’s commitment to healthy living, through YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day® our goal is to support families in their efforts to instill healthy habits at home. It’s free and open to the public.”
