At the Y, we know that sports are about so much more than competition, they’re about building confidence, character and community. And if you’ve ever been to a game where Drue DeVeaux is refereeing, you’ve seen that mission in action. 

Drue doesn’t have to be on the field or court. As a successful small business owner, he could easily spend his time elsewhere. Instead, he chooses to invest his energy at the Y because he believes in our mission and the impact we have on youth and families. He hires staff to run his businesses so he can do what he loves most—encouraging and empowering kids through sports. 

Ask anyone who has seen Drue in action and they’ll tell you he’s not just a referee; he’s a coach, a mentor and a source of unwavering positivity. He makes it a point to learn every child’s name, cheer them on and use every game as a teaching moment. His passion doesn’t go unnoticed. 

One parent, Jodie Dixon, shared this heartfelt message: 

“My extended family, my husband, my kids, and I have all continuously been blown away by the energy, kindness and encouragement that this ref shows for all the kids. He attempts to learn every kid’s name, individually cheers them on, coaches and educates and encourages every time he is out there with them. I am consistently impressed by him on the field and court and I wanted to make sure that you and your facility are aware of what an incredibly valuable person he is to your team. Whatever you are paying him, I can guarantee it isn’t enough for what he brings to the kids and families.” 

Another parent, Lindsey Balcazar, echoed that sentiment: 

“The main reason I’m reaching out, however, is to recognize one of the referees, Drue. We are so thankful for his leadership during the games. He truly stands out and is a unique asset to the Y. His positivity and electric energy create an environment where both the kids and parents are fully engaged and encouraged. I particularly admire how Drue takes the time to check on the kids when they’re hurt, gently corrects mistakes, celebrates every win and acts as a cheerleader for all the players. His approach is truly special and it’s clear he is exceptionally skilled at what he does. While I’m sure the Y already appreciates his contributions, I know that it never hurts to hear positive feedback!”
