Healthy Corner Stores
The YMCA Healthy Corner Stores Initiative is part of a comprehensive effort to connect small scale growers and distributors with urban corner stores to increase the fresh fruits and vegetables available to families in Grand Rapids.
The goal is to bring healthier and more affordable food options to communities that often have limited fresh options by making local produce more readily available at urban corner stores.
Many corner stores and ethnic groceries in the Grand Rapids area struggle to find distributors willing to deliver small quantities of fresh produce. The Y is filling this need as part of its commitment to reforming our local food system, working collaboratively with small scale growers, educating corner store owners about the benefits of selling more fruits and veggies, and educating the community about the benefits of eating nutrient rich food.
The YMCA Veggie Van delivers fresh produce to participating corner stores. At the same time, Michigan Harvest of the Month cooking demonstrations and produce samplings also take place.
