Leah's Story - LIVESTRONG Participant
Two years ago, just after I turned forty, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. Surgery followed, then chemotherapy, radiation and a yearlong course of injections. Though my spirit was strong throughout, after a year and a half of treatments my body was ravaged. I wanted to regain my energy and strength but would have never thought to step foot into a gym. Then I heard about the LiveStrong program.
I was a little nervous as I stepped into the YMCA on the first day of the program, but my fears were quickly replaced by a sense of belonging. The trainers created a very comfortable environment, and our group members bonded over our shared experience. I found myself really looking forward to each session. I enjoyed the workouts, as well as the comradery. Each time I was able to increase the weight on a machine or stretch a little further than I thought I could, I was elated. I made friendships what will long outlast our time in the program. During our final assessments I was blown away by the progress I had made. I was so much stronger than I thought I’d be after just twelve weeks. Even the Seroma (fluid around the surgical area) I had been dealing with for over a year had decreased dramatically!
Inspired by this progress, I joined the YMCA and have continued to work out 3-5 times a week. Just six months after starting the LiveStrong program, I am stronger and have more endurance than I have in years. And since I have made my workouts a priority, my son has started to come with me, and my daughter now works at the YMCA.
To say that the LiveStrong program has changed my life would be an understatement. I am so thankful to have been a participant and hope that the program will continue for years to come, and that many more cancer survivors will find their strength as I have.
