About the Center

The successful growth and future of communities around Michigan and across the country depends on closing gaps in access to quality early care and education for children, as well as gaps in access to reliable transportation for their parents and caregivers — because when children and parents can access these opportunities, everyone benefits. To make this a workable reality, communities need more early childhood spaces close to where families live and work and where they can access reliable transportation to meet the needs of their daily lives.

The new Grand Rapids Central Station Early Childcare Center is addressing this problem head-on through steadfast patience, intentional commitment and out-of-the-box thinking to make childcare more accessible.

Building this center included transforming 12,000 square feet of vacant space at Central Station. It represents a new model for how communities can re-envision public space for the public good. The center is a hallmark of true innovation that required a team effort to overcome unexpected regulatory hurdles. It is a tribute to how community and philanthropy can successfully tackle challenges when they commit to problem-solving together.
